Why Should I Join a Fraternity?
There are many reasons why a student may join the Greek community. The best people to explain why they joined the Greek community are the people currently in Greek organizations. Every person has a unique reason and that is why you should talk with our Brothers to find out why each and everyone of them went Greek. The common themes, though, are as follows:
- Friendship
- Every Fraternity Member has a uniquely strong bond with their brothers that last long after graduation. This friendship cannot be found outside the Greek Community.
- Scholarship opportunities
- Our Fraternity provides its members and other interested students with study hours and tutoring
- Additionally, we provide multiple scholarship seminars on Time Management, Interviewing skills, Resume Writing and many more every year.
- Leadership development
- ΣAM has leadership opportunities and leadership training conferences that will help every member grow as a person and a leader. Our national organization provides annual leadership seminars that focus on Fraternal matters and non-Fraternal leadership characteristics that will lead to success in the future. Additionally, we provide many external sources for leadership development as well.
- Access to a new group of events and programs
- Through ΣAM, students expose themselves to a wide variety of events and programs that they would otherwise not have been privy to otherwise.
- A chance to connect to a larger organization that exists on other campuses
- When you join a National or International Fraternity, you enter a brotherhood that spans the globe, and connects to a wealth of friends and resources beyond the scope of any single University alone.
- We have active brothers studying in China, brothers who live in Canada and Europe, alumni in various professions: Commissioner of the NBA, Chemists, Lawyers, Accountants, Entrepreneurs and many more. All of these people have connections in whatever type of job you are interested in.
- A support network
- With the close and permanent friendships that is mentioned above, comes an equally large Family that will help you when you need anything. We will help you when you are having troubles in school, with family, or just a bad day.
- Developing skills and acquiring experiences for a career or graduate school
- Through their experiences in Greek organizations, members face and overcome challenges that resemble the same challenges they will face throughout their careers, or in graduate school settings: Time management, Risk Management, Accountability, Work Ethic. Greek participants will already possess the skill set to overcome these challenges, when they encounter them beyond their undergraduate years and this is understood by employers, seeing as many administrators were members of the Greek Community when they were in school.
- Fraternities encourage more involvement within the University
- Just as a Fraternity chapter is a part of its larger National organization, it is closely linked to the university that hosts it. With this concept in mind, a successful chapter embraces the need to interact with its university's community and its administration. Through these interactions, such as Greek Week and other IFC supported events (Dance Marathon, Derby Days, Anchor Splash, the array of opportunities available to a member of the Greek community is larger and more significant than someone who limits their activities to themed organizations and objective oriented clubs.
- Community service opportunities
- Every member of the Greek community participates in philanthropic events and performs volunteer work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Our chapter has the most community service hours completed per brother
- Potential career network
- Nothing is more valuable when searching for an internship or job than a vast and encompassing Alumni network, something that we can offer to our members.
- Why Go Greek? Well...Why not?!?
