November 9th, 2008, Sigma Alpha Mu participated in the final event of Delta Gamma's Anchor Week: Anchor Splash. The day was filled with fun, swimming races at the Werblin pool. There were numerous events. Most consisted of various takes on swimming relay races with twists such as pushing a beach ball, or pulling a Delta Gamma sister in a tube. The final event was a synchronized swimming competition. Sigma Alpha Mu received the award for Most Spirited, recognition for our great spirit and participation in all of the Anchor Week events. The Sammy Brothers would like to give a special thanks to Ashley Aquino, Alyssa Ross, and Kelly Tooker, our coaches for the event. We really appreciated their help and encouragement. Also a thanks goes out to Justina Benzan for putting together a great week of events!

On November 8th, Sammy brothers helped out at the Morris County Soil Conservation District (MCSCD) Tree Nursery. The nursery is upgrading its facilities and the small trees that they have need to be moved to their new homes. The new nursery has an engineered irrigation system that is gravity fed and recycles the used water, making it very environmentally friendly. The brothers that participated on November 8th, along with their chapter advisor and representative from the MCSD, Ken Sicknick, moved 268 trees in total. The nursery holds five different types of trees and two different types of shrubs, totaling over 800 trees! Today the brothers concentrated on moving two of the species, which were 98 Green Ash trees, and 170 Red Maples. They had rooted themselves into the ground, right through the pots they were being contained in, making the job quite a task. The trees in the nursery will be sold at cost to organizations that are participating in stream and wetland restoration. The brothers had fun getting out of the city of New Brunswick into the rural area of Morris County on an old farm. Next Saturday Sigma Alpha Mu will be going back up to the nursery to hopefully finish the near 500 trees that have yet to be moved. Also on Wednesday Nov. 5th later in the evening seven Sammy Brothers headed over to the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity house for the event Flap Jacks for Philanthropy, which was an all you can eat pancake event. The event was run by the Brothers of Phi Kappa Tau and the lovely Sisters of Alpha Chi Omega. The Alpha Chi Omega Sisters cooked delicious pancakes and a good time was had by all. |

This past Wednesday Nov. 5th six Sammy Brothers went over to the Delta Gamma House to join in the festivities of their first event of Anchor Week. The event consisted of an educational presentation on proper contact lens wearing and caring. There were also puppies from the Seeing-Eye Dog training program, which is run by a club on the Cook Campus. The Sisters of Delta Gamma also provided refreshments to the guests who came out. Thanks to the DG Sisters for a nice educational evening and who doesn’t love puppies? |
